Digital Innovation Lab Launched to Develop Smart Chain Monitoring Technology

The company has announced the establishment of its Digital Innovation Lab, a dedicated research facility focused on developing smart chain monitoring technologies that leverage artificial intelligence, IoT sensors, and cloud-based analytics. The lab, located at the company’s headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany, brings together a team of 25 data scientists, software engineers, and mechanical engineers to create next-generation predictive maintenance solutions for industrial chain systems. The first prototype being developed by the lab is the Chain Health Sentinel (CHS) system, a modular sensor unit that attaches directly to chain drive assemblies and continuously monitors key performance indicators including tension, vibration, temperature, and wear progression. The sensor data is transmitted wirelessly to a cloud-based analytics platform, where machine learning algorithms analyze the information to detect early signs of fatigue, misalignment, or lubrication degradation. When anomalies are detected, the system generates automated alerts to maintenance teams, enabling proactive interventions before unplanned downtime occurs. “Industrial chain failures account for a significant portion of unplanned downtime in manufacturing and logistics operations, often costing companies tens of thousands of dollars per hour,” explained Dr. Elena Vogt, Director of Digital Innovation. “The Chain Health Sentinel system changes that dynamic by moving from reactive maintenance to predictive maintenance. We are essentially giving our chains a voice, enabling them to tell us when they need attention before they break.” The Digital Innovation Lab has also partnered with two leading academic institutions—the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics and the Technical University of Munich—to advance research in vibration analysis and wear-prediction modeling. Field trials of the CHS system are scheduled to begin in mid-2026 at four customer sites spanning the automotive, mining, and logistics industries. Commercial availability of the smart monitoring solution is targeted for early 2027.
